Family Genograms: Friend or Foe?

ok.

so i dont know if this is even "blogger" worthy but i thought i'd have a shot at it.

in today's class we discussed genograms. not only do i find them extremely confusing, but i find it kind of hard for me to complete. Not that i am not capable of doing it, but my family is just hard to track relationship wise (which i'm sure many others of you can relate to). My aunt and 2 uncles on my mom side are all married but my mom, aunt, and one of my uncles have all been divorced. My mom had her first child (me) with my dad, then my aunt got divorced and remarried to the same guy then divorced again! my uncle got divorced and remarried to a wonderful lady (love her to death) and added another daughter and a son.

I guess what i'm trying to say is my family genogram seems so discombobulated. by no means am i ashamed of my families relationship history, but its all just so confusing! my mom's dad, for example, is adopted but has the same mother. His real father left him when he was little and we have just found out this year that he had died 30 years ago. we now know our real heritage and background and we just figured this out like a month ago. i obviously never met my real great grandfather, so i don't feel like i should include him in a family genogram. just because he's blood related, doesn't mean he's apart of my life. sure we share genetics, but he was never a fixture in my grandfather's life.

Like i said, im sure you can all relate to a confusing relationship family tree. so many divorces and affairs and what not goes on but all i know is i love my family just the way we are. ya the relationships and the genogram make my family look all shook up and complicated, but i wouldn't have it any other way!

ciao

Families are complicated, even the strong ones. So there is no doubt that this assignment will get confusing. But I am glad we're doing it because it is easy to make your family look nice and neat from the outside. In reality every family is disfunctional to different degrees. But that is the beauty of families...they still exsist, they still love each other even though no family is perfect. Especially my family, but I could not imagine my life without them.

Even though many people may be dreading this project I think there is a lot of good that can come from it.
