Ethnic Families

With the topic of ethnic families on tuesday, I thought it a very valid discussion point of what Dr. Hollist's son will consider himself. In my hometown, there was ONE black family. ONE. And, half of the family was african american, while the other half was african american/white because of an interracial marriage. One of the oldest interracial children was one of my best friends, AJ. He hung out with all of the kids in my class (all white) and, I think, considers himself part of the white community. At a party we went to after highschool, there were some other kids there that we didn't know. A large portion of them were black, and a fight started between one of my other classmates and one of the black boys. AJ tried to step in and was ridiculed for trying to be "someone that he's not" (on the white end, he was trying to be 'black' and visa versa, even though that wasn't the case at all). I think it was the first time he'd really realized that there was a definite line between two worlds. Maybe it's irrelevant, but to see it first hand made me realize what Dr. Hollist's son might one day go through...?
